Me
I once wrote a poem. I sent it out to several friends and one of them commented later, “yeah did you get Kate´s poem? It´s surprisingly above average.” While this compliment doubles as a subtle insult I think it is the most brilliant and, coming from this particularly critical individual, sincere praise I have ever received. And so, my aim for this blog is also to be “surprisingly above average.”
I`m not really a stay-at-home mom with no kids. But, it has been my lifelong aspiration. And, currently I´m about as close as I fear I´ll ever get. Neil & are living on an archaeological compound in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico and other than translating my job is to clean up the apartment & go to the market and/or plastics store (which is my favorite place in the town.)
I graduated from Brigham Young University in August & have since realized the age-old trick that nobody is able to grasp until they are firmly in, at the bare minimum, their junior year of college, which is… a BA in Political Science makes you only very slightly more fit for the “job market” than a high school diploma.
Neil discovering his similar fate as a “anthropology” major & I decided to cut our academic losses & head for Mexico, the land of the VW Beetle, as it turns out.
When it comes right down to it, we don´t want real jobs anyhow. We´ll eventually return to school to make at least some pretense of having loftier ambitions than setting up a safe-house for all of our male friends & loved ones here in Mexico in case the US government ever reinstates the draft.
Because of my husband, I am turning into a techno-something…. someone who writes and reads blogs. Not sure how that happened. But, that´s the price you pay for eternal matrimony, I suppose. Nerdiness to the highest degree.
